Maya Stocks is an artist, curator and researcher based in Sydney who works within the mediums of sculpture, print and painting. She began her career in London as a typographer and later as an art director and colour and pattern designer designing aircraft interiors. In 2011, she gained her Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. She recently completed her practice-based PhD in Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.

Her work is concerned with material and memory and the artist’s attempt to distil order out of the chaos of contemporary life through the generation of form. Her practice deals strategically with the fragmentation of the digital space to stretch the tactile possibilities of printmaking as both process and philosophy. Through screen printing, casting and assemblage, found digital images expand into sculptural forms –’thought forms’– and artefacts that remediate dispersed experiences of time back onto the spatio-temporal plane.

Her studio work is informed by her written research which investigates spatial cultures and anti-technicist approaches of the streamlined, efficacious, and functionalist versus the human, organic and anomalous.

As a curator, she enjoys working with chaotic and complex archives and collections of ephemera, drawing out social art histories through the creation of new works made in response.
